Celebrities using their platform and influence to promote sustainability and environmentally friendly practices. This can include advocating for causes like climate change awareness, supporting eco-friendly brands, promoting sustainable fashion, adopting green lifestyles, and using their fame to raise awareness about environmental issues. Essentially, sustainable celebrities use their public image and reach to encourage positive changes for the planet and future generations.

Stella McCartney

A true sustainability hero of the fashion industry, Stella McCartney has been paving the way for an eco-friendlier industry long before sustainability became a buzzword in fashion. Never using animal leather or fur and always crafting her designs from recycled and eco-friendly materials, McCartney keeps setting an important example for the rest of the highly polluting fashion industry.

Leonardo DiCaprio

Since founding his eponymous foundation in 1998, Leonardo DiCaprio has been steadfast in his commitment to "restore balance to threatened ecosystems, ensuring the long-term health and wellbeing of all Earth's inhabitants." Through the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, the acclaimed actor has taken on the role of the United Nations' representative on climate change. Furthermore, his substantial donations to numerous environmental activist groups amount to millions of dollars, solidifying his dedication to environmental preservation.

Emma Watson

Emma Watson also bags sustainable clothing to maintain her ethical wardrobe and set an example for the same. Every red carpet outfit she wore was eco-friendly and sustainable. She even displayed her environment-friendly wardrobe when the Disney blockbuster was released! Emma promoted sustainable fashion practices along with her film. A great step was taken by the young actress to encourage her fans to dress ethically.

Ian Somerhalder

In 2010, actor Ian Somerhalder established his own non-profit organization, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, with a focus on environmental conservation. The foundation supports green energy development and raises awareness about climate change.

In 2020, Somerhalder, along with his Vampire Diaries co-star Paul Wesley, launched Brother's Bond, a successful bourbon brand. They've committed to using only sustainably and regeneratively farmed grains for their product, setting an ambitious goal of contributing to the reversal of climate change.

Angelina Jolie

Angelina Jolie is the last in a long line of celebrities to launch a fashion line. But unlike many of those brands, Jolie’s lineup keeps environmental sustainability in mind.

Atelier Jolie, the brand’s name, isn’t a conventional fashion brand. For one, you can’t buy any of its clothes from a website. For now, the actress describes Atelier Jolie as, first and foremost, a creative space:

“I am building a place for creative people to collaborate with a skilled and diverse family of expert tailors, pattern makers and artisans from around the world.”

The actress’ work isn’t limited to the environment. A United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees since 2001, Jolie has been involved in humanitarian advocacy for years.

Alicia Silverstone

Far from just making one change, Alicia Silverstone, renowned for her role in "Clueless," has been a dedicated vegan since 1998. She's not only authored two vegan cookbooks, "The Kind Life" and "The Kind Mama," but also resides in a solar-powered home. In 2012, she collaborated with Juice Beauty to launch a line of eco-friendly makeup products, while advocating for green living through her blog, "The Kind Life." In a 2015 op-ed for Newsweek, Silverstone warned about the escalating reliance on animals for food, highlighting it as a significant threat to the climate.

Prince William

While referring to the Prince of Wales as a green celebrity might sound weird, leaving William out of this list would be wrong. Like every year, the prince continued to fund the Earthshot Prize Foundation, which supports sustainable investments in new technologies.

This year’s Earthshot winners include GRST, a producer of an innovative alternative to lithium batteries. Other winners include makers of alternatives to plastic packaging, low-polluting alternatives to wooden and coal stoves, and a project to restore the forests of the Andes.

Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman is actively engaged in global efforts to raise environmental awareness. A staunch advocate for animal rights, she collaborated with Té Casan boutique to introduce a vegan footwear line, with all proceeds benefiting The Nature Conservancy. This nonprofit works to safeguard natural habitats in 69 countries.

Portman has consistently lent her support to Global Green USA, notably backing its National Green Schools Initiative. Additionally, she co-hosted the Gorillas on the Brink documentary in Rwanda for the Animal Planet Channel.

Even her personal life reflects her environmental ethos, as her husband, Benjamin Millepied, proposed to her with an eco-friendly engagement ring.

Woody Harrelson

A passionate advocate for environmental protection, actor Woody Harrelson is renowned for his outstanding efforts to minimize his ecological footprint. Leading by example, Harrelson has embraced a lifestyle void of meat, dairy, and plastic consumption, while often powering his film set trailer with solar energy.

Mark Ruffalo

Ruffalo’s activism dates back to 2011, when he co-founded The Solution Project, a “non-profit organization that funds and amplifies climate justice solutions created by frontline communities building power for an equitable and regenerative economy.”

The same year, in 2011, the actor also founded an anti-fracking project called Water Defense.
