Research Published in ACS Nano, a journal by the American Chemical Society, suggest that One layer of cotton along with two layers of Silk showed the highest filtration efficiency of 97%. High thread count cotton performed the best with a filtration efficiency of around 80% for particles larger than 300 nanometers. However, the fabric samples performed even better when layered, especially in hybrid combinations. One layer of cotton with two layers of silk was effective at filtering greater than 90% of particles larger than 300 nanometers.

Q. Are Cloth masks effective to reduce the transmission of the virus?

A. YES. While they are not direct substitutes for N95 medical mask, these filter cloth masks do offer a significant degree of protection against droplets with COVID-19, and offers protection for the eyes, nose, and mouth; protection of your mask against contamination; and prevention of touching of the face. They can also be cleaned, disinfected, and reused, so will continue to provide protection if critical mask shortages continue. On April 3, 2020, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) officially recommended to wear “cloth face coverings” in public, to reduce community-based transmission of COVID-19. Q. Can these fabrics be used to make medical grade mask?

A. No. The masks produced for our handmade fabrics, are not medical grade masks and do not replace N95 masks. “The Center for Disease Control notes that fabric masks are a crisis response option when other supplies are not available. Fabric face masks are best used to protect existing N95s and surgical masks.”

Q. Who should wear these face-masks?

A. Depending where you live, and what’s needed at hospitals in your community, this answer can vary. Please contact your local hospitals to find out what masks they will accept. For first responders and front line medical staff : At minimum, when there is a shortage, fabric masks can be used by doctors and nurses on our front lines to protect existing N95s and surgical masks, so that necessary protection can last longer. For other people working in essential services : Masks can be used by healthcare workers who are not working directly with COVID-19 patients, but who are in and around hospitals and need protections. And, for everyone in essential services such as grocery clerks and delivery people who are in high-exposure situations.
