    What is Mulberry Silk?

Mulberry silk fabric stands out as one of the most distinguished and widely favored variations of silk. It originates from the silkworms of the Bombyx mori moth, which are specifically fed on mulberry leaves. This unique diet contributes to the exceptional quality of the silk produced. With its pure white hue and long individual fibers, Mulberry silk surpasses other silk varieties in terms of refinement.

The states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu lead in the production of Mulberry silk.

Anuprerna is currently working with about 8 artisans from the pure Mulberry Silk Weavers' Cluster located in the Murshidabad district.

    EXPLORE MULBERRY SILK FABRICS

    HISTORY

Silk, also known as “the queen of fibres”, owes its discovery to China. Although its exact origin is shrouded under the shadows of many tales, according to myths and legends that Empress Leizu (2600 BC) accidentally discovered the silk filament. While having tea in the garden, a cocoon fell into the hot liquid. As she attempted to pull it out, she caught hold of the strand which led to the fibre’s discovery and subsequently, its use for weaving.

    PROCESS OF MULBERRY SILK FABRIC

    STEP 1: SILKWORM REARING

The eggs laid by the Bombyx Mori moth give rise to larvae, which are then domesticated and raised. These larvae consume a significant number of mulberry leaves during their growth phase. Once they reach the pupa stage, the larvae stop eating and begin to form a cocoon around themselves.

    STEP 2: STIFLING & BRUSHING

The cocoons are placed into hot water in order to make the protective casing more pliable. Subsequently, the softened casing is gently brushed to extract the tip of the filament.

    STEP 3: REELING

The process involves merging the tips of silk fibers and then running them through a guide before being wrapped around a circular framework known as a reel.

    STEP 4: SILK THROWING

A slight twist is given to the filaments when they are brought together to create consistent yarns. This twist helps to keep the filaments held together during the production process.

    STEP 5: DEGUMMING

Degumming is a procedure that involves the elimination of sericin or gum from yarn, achieved by soap and boiling water.
