Khadi Fabrics Are Hand-Woven Natural Fibre Cloth Originating From Eastern Regions Of The Indian Subcontinent, Mainly Eastern India, Northeastern India And Bangladesh, But Are Now Broadly Used In Pakistan And Throughout India. The Characteristic Texture Of A Khadi Yarn Produce Rich Textures Which Are Furthur Enhanced Once Dyed. The Cotton Khadi Fabric May Be Woven Out Of Already Dyed Yarns Or Be Dyed After The Fabric Has Been Woven.

INTRODUCTION
-Dyeing of fabrics is the application of dyes or pigments on textile materials such as fibres, yarns, and fabrics with the goal of achieving colour with desired colourfastness.
-The primary source of dye, historically, has been nature, with the natural dyes being extracted from animals or plants.
- Though Chemical dyes in textile industry, have been commonly used in the modern world, the recent emphasis on environmental consciousness has brought natural dyes back in focus. Anuprerna embodies this change by bringing sustainable and ethically crafted dyed textiles to the world.
-Being a natural material, Khadi material has a great affinity for natural dyes. The characteristic texture of a Khadi yarn produces a rich texture which is further enhanced once dyed.
HISTORY OF DYEING FABRIC
The earliest dyed flax fibres, dating back to 34,000 BC, have been found in a prehistoric cave in the Republic of Georgia. Artefacts of dyeing fabrics date back to the Neolithic period. Early evidence of dyeing fabrics also comes from Sindh province, where a piece of cotton dyed with a vegetable dye like madder and indigo was recovered from the archaeological site at Mohenjo-Daro.
India with its vast reservoir of natural resources and unmatched craftsmanship developed an entire spectrum of shades obtained from natural dyes, thus, forming an important item in the trade network.
THE PROCESS OF YARN DYED KHADI COTTON
STEP 1: PREPARING THE YARNS
The process includes extracting fibers from cotton seeds, undergoing cleaning, and subsequently handspinning the fibers into yarns. The yarns undergo dyeing with azo-free natural dyes of choice to prepare them for weaving.
STEP 2: WINDING
During the winding process, dyed yarns are wrapped around bobbins using charkha, while weft yarns are also wound onto separate bobbins for future use in weaving.
STEP 3: WARPING
In this step, known as warping, the yarns are converted from bobbins to the warping drum in a specific order according to the design. Then, they are wound onto the weaver's beam setup for the loom.
STEP 4: DRAFTING & DENTING
In the process of drafting, the weaver's beam is utilized to pull the yarn through the heald wire's eye. Subsequently, the yarns are then further drawn through the reed dents in a process known as dy denting.
STEP 5: WEAVING
The loom is prepared for operation and the weft yarn bobbins are carefully placed inside the shuttle. Once everything is ready, the weaving commences following the predetermined design, which may include variations like chambray solids, cross colors, checks, stripes, or space-dyed patterns.
TYPES OF DYEING
Application or the process of dyeing can be done at the spinning, fibre, yarn, or fabric stage. The two types of dyeing are:
1) Piece Dyeing- When dyeing is done in the fabric stage, it is known as piece dyed.
2) Yarn Dyeing- When the process of dyeing is done in the yarn stage, it is known as yarn-dyed fabric.
There are 4 ways for coloration at the yarn stage-Tie-Dyeing, Beam Dyeing, Package Dyeing, and Skein Dyeing.

Chambray fabric is made by interweaving white yarn along the weft and dyed yarn along the warp. We choose white khadi as the weft yarn since dyeing it would reduce its strength and the colour would be inconsistent due to the nature of handspun yarns.

Check is a simple, straightforward pattern that we are all very familiar with. It is a part of our daily life. Yet this pattern requires patience and time depending on the design. The more the colour in the weft, the longer it takes.
Black Dyed khadi Cotton
Khadi cotton, when dyed in the darkest black shade, takes longer to dye compared to other colors. However, the prolonged dyeing process weakens the khadi fabric, especially when it is dyed black. Therefore, extra care is needed while creating bobbins using black dyed yarns. Additionally, weaving black khadi requires adequate daylight to prevent strain on the weaver's eyes.
